A review after another big break.
The other day I was thinking to watch a movie and I had to choose between NH10 and Hunterrr. Both were produced by Phantom and both looked pretty interesting to me. The maker of NH10 had a film like Manorama Six feet Under to his name, and therefore NH10 it was.
However, I entered the cinema hall with the ticket of Hunterrr in my hand and a smile on my face. There was something about it. Mandar Ponkshe was someone whom I had more chances to connect with.
Hunterrr's trailer did make me think of the plot of Dil-Dosti-Etc, but the story is no where close to it. It is a general but fresh story. It is predictable yet unpredictable. And it is a well made film.
Usually I disclose the rating for the film at the end of it, but here I am mentioning it now so as you know that I am not too much in love with the film but its not like I didnt like it.
I give Hunterrr 7.5/10.
The reason y the score is so less coz it is not the film that opens your eyes or anything, however, there is something in that film which is different and something that you can take home with yourself.
Mandaar Ponkshe (Gulshan Devaiah) is an average looking guy from a middle class family. Gulshan has done an impressive job as Mandaar. Good character transitions adopted. He has a typical brahmin family and a typical brahmin mentality. And the whole film is the story of Mandaar's life revolving around the girls, right from his school crush until the time he finally decides to get married.
Ofcourse there is a lot of film that runs through after Mandaar decides to get married, and that's one of the best parts in the film.
The charcterisation is done very carefully, his life story is decorated in a very interesting manner. His school crush, his sexual desires, his crush in college, his first girlfriend, the theory he follows to woo girls, his timepass in his building and very well covered - what the the girls he left are then going through.
His college girlfriend - Parul Kotak (Veera Saxena)
His building affair - Jyotsna (Sai Tamhankar)
His Bhabhi...well so called bhabhi....&
His fiance, Trupti (Radhika Apte)
The film is narrated from the point of view of his cousin brother who is almost present in all the stories directly and indirectly. The screenplay flow is kept non-linear flaunting the skills of FTII pass out Harshavardhan Kulkarni, the writer & director of this film. The non linear screenplay, though not so gripping in the beginning because it seems typical, is necessary for the imapct of the twist before the climax.
The film looks too simple as there is nothing to highlight in it. It looks like a life of layman and thus I could connect better. Those who are expecting a Dharma or Excel production output they better tone down their excitement. Thus a very realistic cinematic taking which is usally tough to achieve is pulled off by John Jacob Mathew.
Kirti Nakhwa has done a good piece of edit...the TAILORMADE film was altered very well by her. Not that there was too much of surpirsing post prouction but everything that is necessary is done well.
Khamosh Shah has done an amazing work in this project. All the VASUs (players) get excited while watching the movie because of the superb album composed by Khamosh Shah. Music is the inseperable factor of the film, without it the film would not have been even close to 6/10. And the use of music is very very smartly done. You hear the songs before but you listen to them while you watch the film.
Few things that I loved about the film were -
The Track of the brother in the Village. Mandaar has a brother who's in the army, the Guru of Mandaar in VASUgiri. That track brings depth to the movie. It gives the whole film a different meaning. I do not know the name of the actor who played the younger one but the elder one is played by Vaibhav Tatwawadhi...my personal favourite...both of them make us remember that character.
Radhika Apte - She is fantastic, she has a superb screen presesnce and she knows how she's being. She is the most convicing actor after the one that is played as Mandaar's brother - the narrator.
The twist before the climax.
And the climax itself with the - Aisa Mujhe laga re - humour.
Thing I did not like -
Sai Tamhankar is only one who exposes in the film. (Not that i wantedother actresses to expose...! I felt even Sai's obscenity was not necessary.) The Phamtom boys have a crush on her is the new news I have got from a close source. But Sai is an actress with nicest potential and that was seen in a film called Rita. Sadly, she doesn't think that way now.
Finally, it is understood that this film is made by an FTII pass out - the production, the locations, too much of use of PUNE, and the scripting and the deliberate try of creating something out of the box. And with that an FTII pass out does have a creative mind which made a film that could have been very shallow and B-grade, a very nicely written script and a well pulled off genuine project.
Kudos to the Team Hunterrr!
Nicely written shoneel.
