Rocky Handsome

Rocky Handsome is Nishikant Kamat's next film after the surprisingly superb remake of Drishyam. Of course I was a little excited about it ever since the film was announced. India has seen some desi-action packed thrillers but something about this film, even about its name, was different. However, Nishi-John paired up in 'Force' before this one and it was churned out very well for both of them. This time it was supposed to be bigger, better and stronger.
Set up in Goa, Rocky Handsome is the story of three worlds coming together. An orphan world of Naomi, a little kid-girl who has no one in this world but connects herself emotionally to the guy of age 30, who stays next door. A world of that guy who is called Handsome by his neighbours and has a past life with the name Rocky. And the third one being the Drug mafia and Human trafficking big-shots in Goa chased by Anti-Narcotic Cell and Goa Police. And when the three worlds come together with a strong emotional back-bone put to the test for Handsome, it is his story of how he becomes Rocky again.
John Abraham is huge, agile, brutal and gruesome as Rocky. His efforts and his dedication for this role is reflected very well on the screen. He had to put in tremendous amount of physical efforts and it will churn out a lot of praises. Teddy Maurya, the guy who asks Shahid Kapoor in Jab We Met, "kaha mili?" "Train main?" - the receptionist at Hotel Decent - has given a mad performance. Whimsical and crazy. Nishikant Kamat as the main villain is very impressive. He had proved himself as a good actor in '404 Error not Found'. Acting along with directing a film so tough to conceive is a difficult job. Here some credit should also go to his Direction team and his cinematographer to let him concentrate on both his roles equally. Sachin Pathak, his associate director, and the rest of the direction team. Every other person on the screen has given out powerful performances. Every name is important this way.

The Ruthless Action and Groovy Background Score play the vital roles in making the film as impactful as it has become. The action is in abundance. When you ask for an action film, Nishi Kamat gives you a hard-hitting action. You get the satisfaction of taking out your anger. You actually do nothing, but John does so much of it that you won't ask for anything more. And the best thing is, because it is John doing all that, it does look so damn convincing.
The film is shot just like any Korean action film (which is not an easy thing to achieve). You may also get a feeling like watching a 'Park Chan Wook' film to some extent. The screenplay that is adapted is good and there are no unnecessary dialogues except one phone call between Rocky and Kevin (that too would have been nicer if it was kept simple).
You should watch the film for its Madness, for its Action and for its Styling.
A superb production design is also what takes the film on the next level.
Given everything, masses won't be too overjoyed to watch this film. It is not a masaala entertainer to eat pop-corns as you watch it, or to snuggle with the bae who is more keen about checking-in on FB than watching the film. Or with a family who is out for a light heart-ed laughter.
You need to have a taste for bitter things to enjoy this Drink. It's hard and its terrific.
            Verdict - 8/10
